About Barry Ladies Choir
Barry Ladies’ Choir meets every Tuesday evening between 7pm and 8.45pm at Trinity Church Hall, Aberystwyth Crescent, Barry. Our main aim is to enjoy singing in a friendly, relaxed, inclusive and fun environment.
We sing a variety of music from traditional songs, classical pieces, songs from musicals and pop songs. The strength of our choir lies not only in the quality of our singing but also in the friendships that exists among our members.
We usually perform twice a year at Christmas and in the summer and welcome opportunities to sing with other choirs and at festivals too.

Who are we?
Barry Ladies’ Choir is very much a community choir – a community of women of all ages coming together once a week during the academic year led by our musical team to practice our singing, prepare for performances, plan social events, and in all these things, enjoy ourselves! Our choir has existed since the 1930s and we have a proud tradition of singing that we want to continue long into the future. By joining our choir, you will have our companionship, the challenge and satisfaction of learning new pieces of music, and the fun and laughter we share when we get together every week.
What parts do we sing?
There are three sections to our choir: altos (the lowest voices); second sopranos (in the middle); and sopranos (the highest voices). New members can join any of these sections and see how you get on, or if unsure our musical director can help you work out your vocal range and guide you to the section where your voice fits best. No-one has to audition and we welcome any women over the age of 18 as members.
How do we learn our music?
We use musical scores but we know that not everybody reads music and many rely on our ears to learn the songs. So we also learn by listening to the notes and words being sung and played by our musical team. We also listen and watch our director mouth the words and keep us in time. There are also helpful practice tracks for you to listen to at home via the members area on our website. Our musical scores can be enlarged or simplified but if you have any suggestions on how we can make our music learning more accessible please get in touch.
How do we perform our music?
Our musical director Emily leads us from the front and we are accompanied on the piano by Chris. We perform some of our songs with our music folders and some without. We will help you with strategies to learn music by heart but will not pressure you if you need the music to perform. Some members have their music folders on a stand and some members sit to perform as well. We like to wear splashes of sea blue for our performances!
Want to come to a rehearsal?
New members are always welcome at any time of the year but we also hold a special Open Evening and the start of each term. If you would like to join us you can either contact us via the form on the Contact Us Page or just come along to one of our rehearsals to see what we're all about. We are registered as a charity and try to keep our membership costs as low as we can so that the choir is as accessible as possible. We offer a four week trial period before you have to commit to paying any membership fees. Holy Trinity Church Hall is easily accessible with no steps. There is usually street parking available nearby and Barry Rail station is about a 10 - 15 minute walk.
